Assistant Professor Lee Ann Johnson is one of 50 promising early career scholars selected for the NIH/NIMHHD’s annual flagship Health Disparities Research Institute, which takes place in August 2022.

As part of the institute, Johnson and her peers will take part in lectures on conducting research with minority health and in health disparities, join in small group discussions, do mock grant reviews, and attend seminars.

Driven by the deaths of her close family members from lung cancer, Johnson—a nurse scientist and Fulbright Scholar alumna—studies palliative and end-of-life care outcomes in patients with advanced lung cancer, one-third of whom report high levels of stigma associated with their disease, a factor that impacts their care and likelihood of seeking the relief of palliative and end-of-life care. The celebrated Jeanne Alhusen—an NIH-funded nurse scientist and the School's associate dean for research—has been named to her alma mater's Society of Scholars, a 55-year-old association that honors Hopkins alumni who have achieved marked professional or scholarly distinction in their fields.

Alhusen's research was the first to demonstrate, on a population-based level, the effects of violence during pregnancy on an infant's risk of being born small-for-gestational age, and her research is included in the U.S. Preventative Services tasks force's recommendations on screening for intimate partner violence as well as its guidelines to prevent perinatal depression. She has recently focused her work on the reproductive experiences of women with disabilities, and, in June 2022, published a new study that found that disabled, pregnant women were nearly three times more likely than their non-disabled, pregnant peers to experience intimate partner violence.

Kathleen Rea (BSN ’93, MSN ’02), a clinical educator in nursing, clinical assistant professor of nursing, and a clinical nurse specialist on UVA Health's 5 Central, is a caregiver and teacher whose support of students, faculty, and the School's teaching and learning mission, said nominator professor Gina DeGennaro, is critical.

Senior assistant dean Abby Self, nominated by Dean Pam Cipriano and Beth Epstein, ensured that the School established protocols and processes to meet protection, testing, contact tracing, and policy compliance requirements driven by COVID-19.

Rea and Self were among those earning a 2022 Hoos Building Bridges award.

Sharon Veith won the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Public Service for 2022. She has been the UVA School of Nursing's liaison to Charlottesville’s Westhaven neighborhood for more than five years, working with community members, steering committee partners, and many agencies that serve within the community.

Veith epitomizes the award’s purpose: “to recognize a faculty member whose work demonstrates the greatest positive impact in a particular place or community and who has undertaken that work together with students.”

Veith was among those who was instrumental in guiding nursing undergraduates on their community health clinical rotations deploy COVID-19 tests and administer vaccines at public health clinics throughout the pandemic. read more >>

Nursing is a field that naturally lends itself to empathy. Sarah Craig’s experience as a first-generation college student taught her to find ways to support students’ success, part of which is “creating a safe learning environment where students feel valued,” she wrote.

Craig—an assistant professor of nursing and director of the School's award-winning Clinical Nurse Leader program—was one of nine UVA faculty chosen from among the University's more than 2,400 professors to earn an All-UVA Teaching Award from Provost Ian Baucomb in May 2022. read more >>

The Bjoring Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry’s 5^th annual Randolph Nursing History Conference featured award-winning writer Deirdre Cooper Owens, author of Medical Bondage, and dozens of other presenters, drawing more than one hundred virtual attendees.

The conference followed on the heels of a forum on Black midwifery with scholars Wangui Muigai, Michelle Drew, and Gertrude Fraser which attracted more than 120 attendees. A recording of the Black midwives forum is available online.

Provost Ian Baucomb and UVA Health CEO and Executive Vice President of Health Affairs Craig Kent announced that Marianne Baernholdt—an international scholar, award-winning mentor, and expert in quality and safety—was chosen as UVA School of Nursing's 7th dean. Dean Baernholdt, a former faculty member at the School and director of its Global Initiatives, comes to the School from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was the associate dean of global initiatives, the interim dean of research, and a founding director of UNC's Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization-Collaborating Center in Quality and Safety Education in Nursing and Midwifery.

National decision day for first-year students arrived, and with it the School formalized its BSN Class of 2025, which includes 80 students, including five men, 31% first-generation students, 48% non-white students, and 21 students from out of state. In all, 1,822 applications were received.

Two faculty members were honored for their teaching and mentoring prowess and innovation. Sharon Veith, an assistant professor and the Westhaven Community's clinic nurse, received the UVA Award for Excellence in Public Service. Fellow faculty member Sarah Craig (MSN '10, PhD '14), an assistant professor and CNL program director, earned the 2022 All-University Teaching Award.
